Former APSU Gov pitcher, George Sherrill, performed impressively in his first All-Star game appearance Tuesday night.

The 79th MLB All-Star game was a four hour, 50 minute, 15- inning marathon. Michael Young hit the sacrifice, game winning RBI to give the American League a 4-3 victory.

Technically, it was Wednesday morning when Sherrill went to the mound.

He allowed only two hits with no runs and three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of work. It was the most he had thrown all season. Before the All-Star game, he had thrown a maximum of 1 2/3 innings.

Sherrill was called to the mound in the 12th inning. The game was tied 3-3 and the National League was in position to score with two outs and the bases loaded. If Sherill was nervous, it did not show at all. He eliminated the National League's hopes of scoring by striking out Adrian Gonzalez with three straight pitches.

In the 13th inning, Sherill was ahead in the count when David Wright shattered his bat smacking a single into center field. However, Sherill threw Wright out at second base after fielding a grounder by the next batter, Carlos Guzman. Next, he struck out Corey Hart and finished the inning retiring Ryan Ludwick with a pop fly.

Sherill finished his night retiring the three National league batters in the 14th with two pop flies and a ground out.

As an Orioles closer, Sherrill came into the All-Star break tied with Jonathon Papelbon for second in saves with 28. American League manager Terry Francona chose Sherrill for the All-Star team.
