Former APSU Gov pitcher, George Sherrill, has been named to Major League Baseball's (MLB) 2008 American League All-Star team. He is the first APSU alum chosen for a MLB All-Star team.
Sherill transferred from Jackson State Community College and played for the Govs as both a starter and reliever during the 1998-99 seasons. After leaving APSU, Sherrill traveled a long road before becoming a Major League All-Star.
As an undrafted free agent, Sherrill began his professional career in the Independent Frontier League.
He played in unaffiliated leagues for five years before being signed to a Minor League contract by the Seattle Mariners. Working hard in Seattle's farm system, he debuted as a Mariner in 2004.
According to statistics at www.mlb.com/stats, Sherrill had his best season as a Mariner in 2007, going 2-0 with three saves and a 2.36 ERA in 73 games.
Sherill was packaged in a multiplayer trade to the Baltimore Orioles before the start of this season. His success continued in the Baltimore bullpen.
He is currently ranked third in the MLB in saves (27). As a Baltimore closer, Sherill made nine straight saves in April and went 7-for-8 in May. Despite some troubles in June, he has a current 3.72 ERA and a 2-3 record in 41 games.
Fans can look for Sherrill in the 79th MLB All-Star Game Saturday, July 26. The game will be televised live at Yankee Stadium on the FOX network. Pregame activities begin at 7 PM.
