Shortly after 8 p.m. this evening, during a private Clarksville City Council meeting, a man shot himself in the council chambers, according to eye-witnesses. Clarksville Police Officers responded to the scene and immediately evacuated the building.

According to meeting attendees, the man was at the meeting to hear the council's decision regarding his request for an ordinance change. The request allegedly had to do with the man's business. After a long discussion, his request was denied by the Council, the man then became visibly upset.

He walked to the front of the room, approaching the City Council members, at which point Mayor Johnny Piper informed the man that it was not an open meeting, thus the floor was not open to debate, according to another unnamed meeting attendee.

At this point, the man took the gun out and shot himself.

The council meets in the Clarksville City Council Chambers which is directly across from City hall.

Those who attended the meeting and spoke to The All State requested to not be named due to the personally emotional nature of the situation.
