Clarksville, TN has a semi-pro women's football team and they are looking for players. The Clarksville Fox Women's Full Contact Semi-Pro Football team is having a mini-camp/tryout on Oct. 3rd and 6th at Northwest High School for all women over 18-years-old.
Started in 2006 by owner and general manager Rob "Pops" Brown, the Clarksville Fox created a fan base playing in a regional league where they made it all the way to the league's championship game.
"It is very addictive and a whole lot of fun," Brown said. " This is something that women have been told for years that they couldn't do and now they can. It is amazing."
In addition to playing football, the Clarksville Fox are an organization that helps the community. Off the field the Fox visit hospitals and churches promoting activities for young women. Trixie, the mascot, is an officially registered spokesperson for D.A.R.E.
The Fox's success has earned them a membership into the larger Independent Women's Football League. The IWFL was founded in 2000 by a group of women in Texas and now has over 30 teams.
The Clarksville Fox are one of several teams including the Baltimore Nighthawks, and the Central PA Vipers who will begin playing for the IWFL in the 2008 season.
Playing in the IWFL means that the Fox will be traveling all over the country facing some of the most competitive teams the sport has to offer.
Brown added, "We are definitely looking forward to the competition. We have great athletes on the team and an excellent coaching staff. Players come from as far as Evansville, IN to play for us."
The regular season begins at the end of April and continues until July. Post season play begins in August. The Fox's home games are played at Northwest High School.
"We have 15 to 18 players returning," Brown said. "We are looking for athletes 18 and older who are interested and want to be part of a championship organization both on and off the field."
They are looking for all interested female athletes, no experience necessary. The mini-camp/tryout will begin with a classroom meeting in the Northwest High School cafeteria on Wednesday Oct. 3rd at 7p.m. Casual dress and something to write with will be required.
On Sat., Oct. 6th a combine workout evaluating strength, speed, agility and overall athletic ability will begin at 1p.m. Appropriate workout clothes, athletic support and shoes (cleats preferred) are necessary to participate. Also bring what you need to drink and a sweat towel. Football equipment will be provided.
