The Lady Govs first stop on their Kentucky tour was Friday September 14 in Richmond, to face the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky. After losing their first game of the match the Governors staged a thrilling three game streak to best their first OVC opponent 3-1.
Game two was a gripping contest between the Lady Govs and lady colonels in which they tied 17 times during the match. The last of these ties came at a 24-24 dead lock before being shattered by sophomore Kirstin Distler who served the Colonels with back to back points.
"She (Distler) played very strong. Both outside hitters, Kirstin and Dodi, were really on fire" said head coach Jenny Hazelwood. "We needed our outside hitters to be dependable and they definitely were that match."
Senior Dodi Szymska posted a career high 29 kills in the match against EKU, as well as 83 of the Lady Govs 214 attacks. Distler and freshman Maegan Squibb were the only other Lady Govs to have double digit kills with Distler having 18 and Squibb getting 12. Dodi and Distler also contributed an impressive 19 digs, however senior Kristen Kirch led the team with 23.
Unfortunately the Lady Govs could not perform as well as they did in their first match when they played another OVC rival in Morehead State. Unlike the Lady Govs, the Lady Eagles didn't have to play in a two match series so they came out and dominated the first two games.
It was a game of runs for Morehead as they constantly repelled the ensuing attack, and at the same time put on an impressive attacking display themselves. None of the Lady Eagle players had more kills or digs than the Lady Govs' dynamos Dodi and Kirch, but they did however beat Austin Peay in kills and nearly matched them in digs.
The third game was evenly matched and it was the Lady Governors who had the lead late in the game 29-28. However, it was another impressive Morehead run that led the Eagles to a 3-0 route of the Governors. Though they lost by two points it was a loss, that the Lady Govs could hold up their heads high because they knew they gave a solid effort.
Dodi posted another impressive outing as she had 18 kills and a team high .333 attack percentage.
"Every team we play against knows that she is more of our go to player" said Hazelwood. "They focus on stopping her, they throw double blocks on her, and they know we're going to her. But she still continues to score."
The volleyball team's next outing will be in Birmingham, Alabama at the "Alabama Swing" as they take on their OVC opponent Samford starting at 7 p.m.
