At the Kentucky Classic in Lexington, KY, the Austin Peay State University Lady Govs volleyball team had a tough weekend. After losing to Cleveland State on Friday, they went on to lose to the eventual tournament champion, Kentucky, before getting their only victory this weekend against Georgetown.
Cleveland State (4-2) beat the Lady Govs 3-0 (30-26, 30-24, 30-28) Friday. The Lady Govs (4-4) struggled to produce offense consistently. Scoring in runs, they kept the games close, but ultimately fell behind generating only 44 kills compared to the Vikings 58.
Senior Dodi Szymska led the team with 14 kills, followed closely by sophomore Kirstin Distler with 10.
The Kentucky Wildcats (6-1) flexed their defensive muscle against APSU on Saturday. In their 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-10) victory they generated 12 blocks. Kentucky's Queen Nzenwa made 10 of those blocks and 10 kills in the game.
The Lady Govs had no blocks in the game. Senior Kirstin Kirch led the team defensively with 16 digs. Szymska continued to play well for the Lady Govs with 12 kills and freshman Sarah Alisaleh served three aces.
It looked like the Lady Govs were going to return home without any wins when they lost the first game to Georgetown (0-6). But APSU rallied to get the 3-1 (24-30, 30-25, 30-17, 30-17) win.
The Lady Govs saved their best offensive performance for the last game. Three Lady Govs posted at least 10 kills and Alisaleh added three more service aces. Szymska brought her kill total for the weekend to 47 with 20 additional kills.
Szymska was named to the Kentucky Classic all-tournament team.
The Lady Govs volleyball team's next stop on the road is Memphis, TN, where they will participate in the Tiger Invitational.
