Lady Govs Go 0-2 at Wright State Soccer Classic

The Austin Peay State University Lady Gov's soccer team began their season this past weekend at the Wright State Soccer Classic. They lost to a tough Evansville team 2-1, and were then defeated by tournament host Wright State 2-0.
In the first game against the Aces, the Lady Govs struck first in the 16th minute. Junior Ashley Beck knocked in the first goal of the season.
Evansville's Mia Tofano did not allow her team to be down for long and tied the game 1-1 before the end of the first half. The Lady Govs made only three shot attempts in the first half.
In the second half, Evansville's offense increased while APSU's offense disappeared. Evansville attempted seven shots on goal and finally scored in the 56th minute.
The Lady Govs managed only two shots on goal and were shut out in the second half. Freshman Samantha Northrop, Kellie Cannon and junior Elyse Lovelace each had one shot on goal. Beck led the team with two shots.
For the second year in a row, the Lady Govs lost their opener to Evansville.
On Sunday the APSU Lady Govs played their second and final game of the Wright State Soccer Classic against tournament host Wright State.
The Lady Govs offensive struggles continued. They were outshot 26-8 in the game, with only three of those eight shots on goal. Senior forward Jessica Hosse led the team with two of the three attempted shots on goal.
Wright State kept sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Smith busy early. The Raiders scored the first of their two goals in the first minute of play. Smith was able to keep the Raiders out of the goal six times after Wright State's initial score, but not the seventh by Amy Miller.
The Lady Govs were forced to stay on defense most of the game. Only four Lady Govs attempted shots compared to12 different Raiders who attempted shots.
The Lady Govs soccer team continues to play on the road this Friday against Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. Their first home game is Friday, September 14 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 7 p.m.
