Chancellor Manning announces retirementTennessee Board of Regents (TBR) Chancellor Charles Manning announced his retirement June, 26. His resignation becomes effective June 30, 2009. In the quarterly meeting among fellow TBR board members, Manning read a prepared statement: "Based on everything we have accomplished, I believe I am leaving you with a Board of Regents' system that has a far higher expectation of what it can do collectively for the people of Tennessee ... Barnes faces current senator and Senate Speaker Pro Tem Rosalind Kurita. The winner of this primary election could become a state senator because no republican has filed candidacy in this district.

How do you respond to a comment like that?
I wish I could say this is a comment I overheard in one isolated instance, in jest or on TV, but it's not. I've heard this statement on numerous occasions from different people, and it's even been spoken amongst close relatives of mine.
